Top Performers Enjoy the Journey, Not Just the Destination

It’s very common for people to focus solely on the final result of a project, because that’s what they consider to be their goal. Whether it be financial gain, personal growth, or the completion of a long-running project, people only tend to care about the end of the road where they’re finally able to reap the rewards of their hard work.

However, there’s a large section of your time that you’re devoting to getting to that point, so you should be able to enjoy that as well. Different goals take different amounts of time to achieve.

It could be a week, or it could be years. No matter how long it takes, you don’t want to be unhappy during that time as you work towards your goal. Successful people enjoy the journey to their destination for two main reasons.

First, they’re giving themselves a much higher chance of success by enjoying what they’re doing. If you were doing something you hated, day in and day out, you’d eventually question whether or not it’s worth it and decide to simply give up potentially.

On the other hand, if you knew you were working towards a goal but you were also enjoying yourself, you’d be way more likely to stick to your plans. Second, they simply want to stay in good spirits.

Success or not, nobody wants to be miserable all day. Being happy prevents you from getting stressed or depressed, which can both lead to numerous mental and physical problems.

If you’re not enjoying what you’re doing while you work towards your goal, it’s time to sit down and plan out a better way to achieve your goals. Instead of just putting up with a life that you’re not happy with, you should adjust the way you’re approaching your goal so that you can actually enjoy it.

Write out what you’re not enjoying about the journey and then come up with more enjoyable alternatives. This could mean switching jobs, working different hours, using different services, and so on.

Don’t be afraid to try different things. The worst case scenario is that you reset to where you were, and the best case scenario is that you improve your attitude and get more enjoyment out of your daily life.

Track your journey and see what’s disappointing to you versus what brings you happiness. It’s very important for you to enjoy the things you’re doing to reach your goals, because otherwise it’s going to be a long, strenuous process.
